The first could produce perplexity by being mistaken for the half dollar, while the groat, as it is not a further subdivision of the sixpence, would also operate unfavorably to the introduction of the new Coin.

On failure of this Experiment,

there would remain the other course proposed by Mr. Coffin of supplying the real fractional parts of the dollar, (quarters and eighths) even though they should be newly coined in imitation of the dollar. "The expense of Coinage, and of conveyance to Hongkong (that officer observed) would in this case be sacrificed : but a deterioration not exceeding that of the British Silver coin would probably
